Birds instinctively hide signs of illness to protect themselves from predators. By the time obvious symptoms appear, they are often critically ill.

Contact a veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following:

• Sitting fluffed up at the bottom of the cage or reluctant to move

• Breathing with an open mouth or heavy tail bobbing

• Falling from the perch or an inability to perch properly

• Stops eating for several hours

• Has significant active bleeding

• Sustained trauma or was attacked by another animal

• Is egg-bound or straining to lay an egg

• Has a sudden inability to use one or both legs
